Well it’s that time of year again and on behalf of everyone at Alltrac 4WD I wish you and your family a very merry, happy, safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. For those staying at home it makes sense if time permit’s to experience some of the areas a little bit closer to home as day trippers or with an over night camp. The South East and Coorong aren’t too far away and of course a pleasant drive through the wine regions can be enjoyable. Another area worth visiting is the Mid North. Burra has heaps to see or a bit further north there is very interesting touring route from Hallett to Terowie. We close between Christmas and the New Year but I always seem to have something on the list at home to keep me out of mischief. I will spend a couple of days helping a mate of mine with camp ground hosting in the northern part of the Coorong. We spend the days patrolling by boat or 4WD between Salt Creek and the Murray Mouth checking that the amenities are topped up and that every one is aware of what they can and can’t do as well has hopefully pointing out a few features or activities they may not have been aware of. So I hope you enjoy the break [ if you get one ].

Turbo Timer‘s Yes or No.
What’s a Turbo Timer? Turbo timers are a device that you can install into your vehicle so that after turning off the engine it keeps running for a period of one to three minutes to allow the turbocharger to cool down. Turbochargers may need to cool down to prevent excessive heat build up in the turbine housing whilst no oil is circulating, this can ‘coke’ the oil producing small very hard particles that can damage your engine. In theory leaving the engine running will allow some of this heat to dissipate. My vehicle is fitted with and exhaust temperature gauge [pyrometer], from this I can see the exhaust temperature at all times. Around town and gentle cruising it rarely exceeds 300degC but pulling up a long hill with load it reaches over 600degC. If the vehicle has been running under full load it is sensible to allow it to idle for a couple of minutes. Around town it as a waste of time and money. Most vehicles are fitted with a water cooled Turbocharger housing which helps to thermo-siphon heat away when the engine is not running. Did you no it is illegal to leave a vehicle with the engine running un attended. So should you have one? It’s your decision, I don’t. Around town the turbo timer is an inconvenience , on trips it doesn’t take much to leave the engine running for a couple of minutes if necessary. In a workshop situation if a vehicle is accidentally started it can not be easily shut down with potential dire consequences. So I will keep my money until I go to a 4WD or Camping show and find something I didn’t know about that I must have.
Towing - Load Distribution Torsion Bars.
When towing heavy loads such as Caravans, Horse Floats and many of today’s Off Road Camper Trailers the weight on the tow bar can be quite significant. When the trailer [ I will refer top all of the above as trailers ] is attached to the vehicle the rear of the vehicle drops and this weight uses the rear suspension as a fulcrum actually reducing the weight on the front axle. [ this happens even if you have heavy duty springs installed ]. As the front axle is the steering axle reduced weight can mean less effective steering, particularly in an emergency situation. Good quality Load Distribution Torsion Bars fitted between the trailer and the vehicle transfer weight forward to the front axle. So if the above situations apply to your vehicle it is really a must to use Torsion Bars, then add some good shocks to the vehicle to handle the extra load and then if you need to improve the vehicle ride height and clearance or load carrying capacity some decent springs will set it all up properly. As Christmas approaches we always get very busy and don’t want to disappoint any one. If your vehicle is coming due for service don’t forget to book ahead as far as possible. Remember it is no use having your vehicle serviced the day before you are departing on a trip and find some other problems or issues that can not be fixed on that day.

For December 2008 book you car in for service we will carry out a full front and rear Wheel Alignment check and provide you with written readings. If adjustment is required we will contact you for approval and charge you only for the adjustments.
